Learn How Meta Description Tags Can Boost Your Traffic

Writing a good page title can increase the amount of people that will see you within the search engine results but how to you make sure they click your link. The Description tag allows you to add a small description about your website, this give you a chance to increase the amount of clicks you can get by writing a good description. The description tag is also rated (not as highly as it use to be) when search engines scan your content for keywords.

How To Use The Description Tag

If you hand code your website you will need to manually enter the description tag, if you use web apps like Joomla, WordPress, Drupal, etc you simply enter the description and it will do the code side for you. So how do you enter it manually, simply enter the following code within the <head></head> tags of your code;

<META NAME="Description" CONTENT="Your description goes here.">

You should make sure that every page in your website has a properly written description tag.

How Long Should Your Description Be

The description tag is mainly used for describing your web page to people if it appears in the search engine results. So your main goal here is to get the interest of people reading through the results, so you need to make the most of the room you have. You only get about 2 sentences worth of text before the rest of it is cut off. You can write your descriptions longer if you want to but there is no point as it will not get seen by readers. Your best bet is to put your best, most persuasive writing in the first 2 sentences and leave it at that.

Describe Your Content

I have seen a few descriptions for websites within the search engines that promote more than the content on the web page. By this I mean that they tried to over promote their web pages and get clicks but the page loads and only half of what the description said was actually covered.

My point here is to make sure that you only promote/describe (in the description tag) the actual content on your web page, don’t say things that you don’t cover. All you need to do is accurately describe your content and you will be fine.
