What is WordPress?

WordPress is the most popular Blogging platform out today, it is a piece of software that you install on your web server (there are also WordPress.com versions available) to manage all your Blogging needs. WordPress is Open Source, this means that it is free for everyone to use for any reason.

When you should Blog

I believe that everyone can benefit from Blogging no matter what niche they’re in (with maybe a few exceptions), it’s all a matter of “When” is the best time to Blog. Some people may even start off their first website as a Blog and that’s fine but for those that start with another type of site need to decide when they should make a Blog (if they want to).

Self Host or WordPress.com

You can install WordPress on your own server with your own Domain, you also have the option to start a WordPress Blog on WordPress.com. Which should you use? In most cases I would say it is better to user your own Domain and Self Host WordPress. I say this because when you make a WordPress.com Blog you are only give a sub domain like “yoursite.wordpress.com” and this is not good if you are trying to build a reputable Website or a name for yourself. If you already have a website and want to start a Blog I suggest adding it onto your current domain (if it’s related) so you could create something like “blog.yoursite.com” or “yoursite.com/blog”.

Support for WordPress

Like Joomla, WordPress is open source and has millions of followers and fans so as you can imagine the support for WordPress is amazing. There are thousands of free themes that are available through WordPress for free, this lets you quickly and easily (and free) change the look of your entire Blog. There are also thousands of Plugins made to add extra functionality to WordPress, if you need your Blog to do something chances are there is a Plugin for WordPress that does it.
