If you have Fantastico on your Hosting Account (Hostgator Recommended) then I suggest you use this tutorial “Installing Joomla 1.5 with Fantastico”.
Not everyone will have the option to install Joomla 1.5 using Fantastico so those that don’t will have to install it manually. This isn’t hard but takes quite a bit longer to install then using Fantastico. Installing Joomla manually involves creating a MySQL user and MySQL database for the Joomla installation and also an FTP Account.

Click on any item in the list for the “How To” tutorial for that item:
Step 1) Download the latest Joomla Installation Package, Download Joomla HERE.

Step 2) Now you will need to unzip the downloaded file, unzip all the contents into a single folder named something like “Joomla Installation” (it doesn’t matter what you name it here).
Step 3) The next step is to upload all the installation files to your website. For this you will need to use an FTP Client, I recommend using FileZilla. If you don’t know how to upload to your website you can learn how with this tutorial “How to Upload files using FileZilla”. You will want to upload the installation files to the location you want to install Joomla, for your main site (www.yoursite.com) upload the files to your public_html folder. For www.yoursite.com/joomla make a new directory called “Joomla” (you can name it anything) within your public_html folder and upload the Joomla installation files to there.
Uploading may take awhile, depending on your internet connection it could take anywhere from 30 minutes or more.
Actual Installation Wizard
Step 4) Using your browser go to www.yoursite.com (where ever you uploaded the installation files to).
Step 5) Choose the language you want the installer to be displayed in, leave on “en-US English (US)" for English and click next

Step 6) After you clicked next Joomla Installation will perform a test to make sure Joomla will run on your hosting account. The most important part of this page is the Pre-Installation check of required stuff, which is the first section. The “Recommended Settings” are only recommended and Joomla will still work without them.

Most hosts will support everything Joomla needs but there are some that don’t, if you don’t have a hosting account yet then I ****Recommend Hostgator**** (I say this a lot I know but they are an awesome hosting company and I use them for everything.).
If all is good click “Next”.
Step 7) Now the installation wizard will display the “GNU General Public License”, basically Joomla is open source and free. You can read this if you want, when you are ready just click “Next”.
Step 8) Now for some settings. The details asked here may change from version to version but the main stuff will be very similar. First “Database Type” is “MySQL”. “Host Name” is usually “localhost” but some hosts may be different, if localhost doesn’t work you will need to contact your hosting company. Hostgator is just “localhost”.
Step 9) You will now need to enter the MySQL settings. Enter the “Username” and “Password” for your Joomla MySQL User, to learn how to make a MySQL User and Database click here (remember to make sure the MySQL User you create for Joomla is added to the MySQL Database you make for Joomla). When ready click “Next”.

Step 10) You now have to enter in FTP account settings (Learn How To Create an FTP Account). Once you enter your login details for the FTP account you can click “Autofind FTP Path” and Verify “FTP Settings”, click “Next” when ready.

Step 11) In the first section simply enter your site name, for example my site is Website Success Tutor.

Step 12) Next is the admin email and password; enter the email address for the admin account, the password you enter here will be the password used to log into the admin section of this Joomla Installation (along with the username “Admin”).

Step 13) The third section can be ignored but for beginners and new comers to Joomla it is highly recommended to install the sample data, this helps heaps with understanding how to use Joomla. To do so click on “Install Sample Data”, you should then see a message “Sample data installed successfully”, click “Next”.

Step 14) You will now see an error message that says “Please remember to completely remove the installations directory...”. You will see this message every time you try to access Joomla until the folder called “Installation” is removed. So you will need to use an FTP Client (like FileZilla) and remove the directory called “Installation”. This should be easy as it is the same location you copied the installation files too in step 3, you are simply removing a single folder called “Installation”.

Done, you have installed Joomla. To get started working with Joomla check out the other Joomla tutorials.
